一ヶ月ほど前、脇坂の元に "K" から指示書が届く。そこには「蠅の王」と呼ばれる男がD機関を率いてスパイ狩りを行っているため注意せよという忠告と、スパイ・ハンターが「笑わぬ男」という暗号名を持ち、前線部隊を慰問して回る「わらわし隊」と関係があることが記されていた。脇坂はスパイと軍の二重生活とハンターの影に怯える中、偽情報を使って逆にハンターを炙り出そうと考える。そこへ「わらわし隊」に属する漫才コンビ『藤木藤丸』の藤丸がやって来て “笑わない目を持った男” の話をする。全てを悟った脇坂が慌てて引き返すと、突然何者かに襲われる。目を覚ました脇坂が見たものは、かつて彼が治療に当たっていた西村久志陸軍二等兵だった。彼こそが “笑わぬ男” にしてD機関員であり「わらわし隊」の慰問は脇坂をおびき出すための罠で、一ヶ月ほど前の "K" の手紙はD機関の偽装だった。さらにD機関は "K" の正体……片岡大尉のことまでとっくに突き止めていた。
